I want to go bareboating, do I need sailing lessons?

Do you wish you were a skilled sailor? So many people do! Sailing is an brilliant way to connect with the environment, become more confident, and explore idyllic destinations around the world and in Australia, like the Whitsundays. The team t #GoBareboating think sailing is one of the best skills you can learn, that has many benefits.

Whether you’ve had a little sailing experience and are looking to improve your skills or are a newcomer who is ready to learn to sail, you should consider investing in professional sailing lessons. This is particularly useful id you want to become a frequent boater.

While you do not need sailing lessons or a boat license to hire a bareboat in the Whitsundays, you do need a little previous experience. We do have numerous power vessels that you can hire if that’s more your style for cruising the Whitsunday islands. However, for those looking to learn how to sail, sailing lessons before you charter are a great way to start.

Are Sailing Lessons Right for Me?

It depends on many factors. If you’re considering a yachting holiday in the Whitsundays, you have the option of hiring a power boat or sailing boat. If you do have some sailing experience already, you can hire a sailing boat: a license or qualification is not required. We provide a bareboat "briefing" before you go with one of our qualified staff, which gives you the chance to brush up and feel confident before you head out on your own. If you have done a bit of sailing before, sailing lessons might not be necessary for you, unless you are wanting to improve your sailing skills beyond the basics.

Those who want to go sailing regularly, or who want to sail on particular types of vessels should perhaps consider sailing lessons. Those hoping to tackle more advanced waters should also consider investing in some sailing courses. Practical sail training will enable you to handle a vessel in more challenging conditions, and to skipper a range of more complex boats. Anyone looking to sail or go bareboating in other parts of the world should certainly have more advanced skills under their belt.

Sailing lessons are a wise move if you ever choose to buy your own yacht. Nothing beats the thrill of owning and captaining your own vessel.

Sailing Lessons in Australia

Australia is a sailing paradise. There are lots of places where you can learn to sail in Australia. Working with a well-established sailing training provider close to home is the best way to learn. Reputable, accredited sailing schools can be found in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and in other coastal cities and towns too.

To go bareboating in the Whitsundays, consider doing a ‘Prepare to Bareboat Charter’ course at your nearest sailing school. This is designed with an understanding of the requirements of what we do in mind, and will set you up for success on your first bareboat charter in the Whitsundays.

Planning to go bareboating overseas too?

Find a sailing school that offers ICC (International Competent Crew) certification or the RYA Day skipper license. These are often needed when chartering internationally, particularly in Europe.
